The Fake Prophet is a ground breaking new Nollywood film which has been made in collaboration with the child rights charity, Stepping Stones Nigeria. It powerfully encapsulates many major child rights issues that are facing Nigerian society today. These include: child witchcraft accusations; child exploitation and abuse by fraudulent pastors; child trafficking, and child abandonment.

This film by the renowned Nollywood director, Teco Benson, is a tale of drama, suspense and intrigue and aims to counter-balance many other Nollywood films which have exacerbated the belief in child witches, and subsequently encouraged the abuse and abandonment of children. We hope that the film will stimulate debate about the issues of child witchcraft accusations, abuse and trafficking and challenge current abusive practices which prevail in some parts of Nigeria. We therefore anticipate a huge reaction once the film has been released in Nigeria.

NOLLYWOODNOW!

The UK’s first ever festival of Nigerian film, known as Nollywood finally arrives in London. The festival, a week-long celebration of the world’s second largest film industry, will feature six film screenings introduced by talks from industry experts including Nigerian actors, film academics and representatives from Nollywood TV broadcasting.

The film programme takes in five of the best-loved popular Nigerian films, along with the Canadian documentary Nollywood Babylon.

Phoenix Fry, creative director of Nollywood Now! said: “I hope this festival is just the beginning of a more widespread recognition of Nollywood as a global cinema phenomenon. Ten years ago India’s popular cinema was dismissed by the mainstream, but is now a vital part of our shared culture. The dramatic and exciting films coming out of Nigeria, enjoyed by so many people here in the UK, deserve a similar place in Britain’s cultural life.”

Adekunle Detokunbo-Bello, the Nigerian actor, film-maker and academic said: “For Nollywood fans and people new to Nigerian film, this festival is an amazing opportunity to enjoy some of the best films from Nigeria. Nollywood Now! showcases the evolution of the most popular films within Africa, from the early guerrilla shoots in Lagos to recent festival-acclaimed productions.”

Moses Babatope, Odeon Cinema’s special projects manager for Nollywood said: “This festival marks an important moment for Nigerian cinema in the West. With production values approaching European and Hollywood standards, audiences in Britain – who have traditionally watched Nollywood films at home on TV – are now demanding cinematic screenings of new films.”

Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock said: “I’m immensely proud that Lewisham Council has funded the UK’s first ever festival of Nigerian film. The borough is home to one of the largest Nigerian populations in the country, and this festival is a great opportunity for us all to celebrate the outstanding global success of Nollywood film-making.”

THE FAKE PROPHEt

premieres in London

UK based NGO Stepping Stones Nigeria (SSN) is delighted to announce the release of their new and ground-breaking Nollywood film – The Fake Prophet - produced as an advocacy tool to save and change thousands of children’s lives.

Stepping Stones Nigeria has produced The Fake Prophet in an attempt to stimulate debate and pioneer positive change on challenging issues such as child trafficking and the labelling of children as ‘witches’.  The film powerfully encapsulates many major social and political issues that affect Nigerian society today, including the dangers faced by children following witchcraft accusations.

Gary Foxcroft SSN Programme Director stated that, ‘Given the projected reach of The Fake Prophet and the power of the Nollywood film industry we anticipate that this film will go a long way to help challenge deeply held attitudes, values and beliefs and will ultimately prevent the abuse of children. As such we are massively excited about its potential’.

SSN have collaborated with the leading Nollywood film director Teco Benson to produce this film. Teco is well known throughout the world for his timely and influential productions. He also believes in the power of film to instigate positive change.

Many Nollywood films have capitalised on the belief in child witches, with some depicting children eating human flesh and using their power to wreak havoc over communities. These films have had a significant and damaging impact on children who become victims of torture, violence and abuse as a result of witchcraft accusations.

The Fake Prophet aims to counterbalance these films and expose the truth behind the so-called men and women of God who have made their wealth from branding children as witches and highlight the legal consequences of child witch stigmatisation and abuse.

The Fake Prophet premieres in London on the 24th July at the

Amnesty International Human Rights Action Centre, 17-25 New Inn Yard EC2A3EA.

Proceedings kick off with a drinks reception at 6.30pm, followed by the film screening at 7.30pm.

There will be a Q&A session with SSN’s Programme Director, Gary Foxcroft and film director Teco Benson.

Edinburgh Africa in Motion wins prestigious international award

The Africa in Motion film festival in Edinburgh has just received a prestigious international award endorsed by the United Nations, from the Foundation for Subjective Experience and Research (S.E.R. Foundation), an organisation that supports worldwide projects in the area of children and youth, culture, inter-cultural dialogue and religion.

The festival received this award in the context of the United Nation’s International Year of Reconciliation 2009. The S.E.R. Foundation presented a report on Africa in Motion to the UN Secretary General in January 2010. Africa in Motion 2009 took as its main theme Reconciliation, with the festival screening a range of films on this topic as well as hosting a symposium and various panel discussions on trauma, conflict, peace and reconciliation in Africa. The S.E.R. Foundation described the Africa in Motion film festival as an outstanding project because it emphasizes the need for reconciliation and the necessary steps for its realization to be taken in order to improve conditions and build bridges leading to a better mutual understanding, and thus creating the basis for sustainable peace.

The festival was selected as one of 12 projects worldwide awarded prizes in the categories of political and socio-economic projects; creative projects; educational/indigenous/athletic projects; and spiritual/healthcare projects. The festival will receive the award at an award ceremony in Switzerland in August.

Lizelle Bisschoff, founder and director of Africa in Motion, says of the award: “We are extremely excited about and proud of this award, which is a wonderful recognition of our attempts to change perceptions of Africa in the UK. Despite the conflicts and problems in Africa that the Western media is inundated with, the continent has achieved peace and reconciliation on so many levels and the West can certainly learn from Africa in various ways. This is what we tried to achieve with last year’s festival and this award is a confirmation that we are on the right track.”

The prize money for the winning film at the 2009 Africa in Motion short film competition - South African Paul Emmanuel’s 3SAI A Rite of Passage, was partially sponsored by the African Movie Channel.

 Tunde Kelani’s Arugba

makes London outing

Interwoven with themes of balance, love, loyalty, and loss, her tale also explores issues of governance, political corruption, HIV/AIDS and the influence of modernity over convention, all within the context of a culture that is rich with traditional values yet marred by traditional viewpoints.

This Kelani masterpiece is showing at the Odeon Imax Cinema in Greenwich on 7th May 2010. Booking hotlines - 02072777021, 07947763515, 07932504996, 07950514589.
